Project: High Performance DCI-Compliant 2K Digital Cinema Server

DSP Group,  The Center of Pervasive Computing, Institute of Computing Technology, CAS, Beijing, China
Project Director: Prof. Zhensong Wang

Background
Digital Cinema Initiatives, LLC (DCI) was created in March, 2002, and is a joint venture of Disney, Fox, Paramount, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Universal and Warner Bros. Studios. DCI's primary purpose is to establish and document voluntary specifications for an open architecture for digital cinema that ensures a uniform and high level of technical performance, reliability and quality control.

Project information
The goal of this project was to independently develop the first DCI-compliant 2K digital cinema server in China.

Technical parameter
  • Packaging: Packaging the DCDM(image, audio and subtitle) files using existing Material eXchange Format (MXF) specifications and eXtensible Mark up Language(XML)
  • Image format: 2K(Resolution: 2048*1080) or 4K(Resolution: 4096*2160)
  • Image pixel format: X'Y'Z' color space; Bit depth: 12bits/component, so 36bits/pixel
  • Compression: DCI compliant JPEG2000 codestream
  • Audio format: 16 channels; 24bits per sample; Broadcast Wave file format (.wav), using PCM WAVE coding.
  • Subtitle format: subpicture data is encoded as XML-based document; subpicture frames are encoded as PNG files;
  • Security: AES-128bit encryption
  • Bitrate: For the 2K resolution, the max bitrate is up to 250Mbps

The components of the server
  1. Server. ( A server with linux system and PCI-X interface)
  2. Video processing card.( A reconfigurable SOC system, using PCI-X interface to connect with the server)
  3. Audio processing card.( A reconfigurable SOC system, using PCI-X interface to connect with the server)
